Bring on one or more student/(s) from Fanshawe College in the Law Clerk diploma to conduct a project-based experience. Students will work on one or more projects of your choosing over the fall term connecting with you as needed with virtual communication tools.
Students are available to engage in an employer-lead virtual project from September 1st to December 18th. Students can start as late as mid-October.
Hours will be dependent on project scope and student availability.
Co-ops can either be paid or unpaid.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, student placements will only occur virtually and will count towards a fall co-op credit.
Learners
Our students are eager to put into practice what they have learned about the role of a law clerk, improve their professional demeanor, learn about diversity and ethics, prepare litigation documents, assist with e-discovery processes, draft corporate/commercial documentation, complete Family Law financial statements, and learn about administering estates, drafting leases and contracts.
Additionally, students conduct legal research, search titles and process real estate transactions.

Requirements
Our law clerk students are capable of the following tasks:
- Support the needs of clients and legal professionals through the use of accurate terminology and professional communication strategies, both orally and in writing;
- Complete all work within routine and unexpected time lines and limitation periods within the legal environment;
- Use current and relevant electronic and print resources, within the legal environment, to conduct legal research, to assist with file and evidentiary management, to facilitate communication and generate legal documentation, complying with current regulations and procedures;
- Research and summarize the presenting legal issues, applying knowledge of substantive law, to support the legal team;
- Apply rules of procedure to support best legal practices;
- Conduct oneself professionally in adherence to the guidelines of the Law Society of Upper Canada;
- Carry out clerical and administrative duties for the operation of a variety of legal environments;
- Outline strategies for ongoing professional development to ensure continuing competence as a Law Clerk;
- Act equitably and justly with diverse populations;
- Provide support for legal professionals in courts and administrative tribunals within the legal system.
The exact project topic and scope will depend on your law firm's needs. Student can work on some or all of the aspects mentioned above.
Additional company criteria
Companies must answer the following questions to submit a match request to this experience:
Provide a dedicated contact who is available to answer periodic emails or phone calls over the duration of the project to address students' questions.
Employer should provide updates on students' work mid-way through the co-op, and complete a final evaluation form at the end of the work term.
Co-op terms are ideally remunerated, payments are optional however.
Company must agree to a co-op work term agreement form, provided by the co-op consultant.
