Learner goals and capabilities

This course is aiming to have students work with an industry partner on an IT management project using Cisco specific products and Microsoft-based networking. Students will design and implement a computer network design for your company. They are familiar with most aspects of network design. Therefore, students can either design and implement a new network, or augment parts of your existing network.

The focus for students is to build and configure a complex network using skills gained throughout the course. In addition to technical expertise, they are also building their project management skills.

This course utilizes the network design framework of the Cisco Certified Networking Association (CCNA), thus students are most familiar with Cisco and Microsoft-based networking equipment.

Students will submit a report outlining their work done: tasks performed, outputs, demonstrated working blueprint. They will also be presenting their work in an audio-visual presentation to your company.

Alluding to the open-ended nature of any aspect of a problem, project scope will vary depending on your company's needs.

Project Examples

Requirements

Given the hours allocated, students can tackle a company's problem both at the entirety of a novel network design down to a detailed assessment of an aspect of your existing network. They are capable of scoping a problem, analyzing its nature and providing recommendations regarding the matter.

A concrete example of a student's past work on a specific project was a "guided case study" for Cisco:

          • Design the network using the diagram and accompanying narrative.
          • Simulate and test the network using the network simulator tool Packet Tracer.
          • Correctly configure single-area OSPF
          • Correctly configure VLANs and 802.1q trunking
          • Correctly configure Frame Relay
          • Correctly configure DHCP
          • Correctly configure NAT and PAT
          • Create and apply access control lists on the appropriate routers and interfaces
          • Verify that all configurations are operational and functioning according to the scenario guidelines
          • Provide documentation and configuration files as detailed in the following sections.
